Dr. Amir Abolhoda is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon who serves as Medical Director, Cardiothoracic Robotic Surgery; Co-Director, ECMO Program at the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute and Vice Chair, Thoracic Surgery Section at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center.
Dr. Abolhoda earned his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine. He completed two residency programs, the first in general surgery at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the second in cardiothoracic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center (Albert Einstein College of Medicine) in New York City. Dr. Abolhoda completed research and clinical fellowships in thoracic surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
His research has been published in several peer-reviewed publications on surgical treatment of non-small cell lung cancer; tumor-antigen expression; and optimization of pre-and post-operative clinical metrics for minimally invasive thoracic surgery. Dr. Abolhoda is currently participating in several national intergroup cooperative trials for treatment of lung cancer.
Dr. Abolhoda performs a myriad of thoracic and foregut surgical procedures, using robotic techniques, including robotic lobectomy, segmentectomy, thymectomy and hiatal hernia/anti-reflux operations. He also performs high risk coronary artery bypass grafting (off or on-pump) procedures, emergency aortic dissection repairs and surgery for all types of acquired valvular heart disease.
Dr. Abolhoda is a Diplomate of The American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He leads the Thoracic Surgery Case Observation site at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center and trains thoracic surgeons on the Intuitive Surgical da Vinci XI® to refine skills, learn new surgical modalities for minimally invasive thoracic procedures. Additionally, Dr. Abolhoda is an Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery, University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.
In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, watching soccer and spending time with family.
